ELIGIBILITY
Who can take this exam?
Eligibility
Open only to candidates who rank within that year's qualifying cutoff of JEE Main (Paper 1), subject to the eligibility criteria set annually by the coordinating IIT.
Academic requirements
Must have qualified JEE Main in the same year and meet the top-rank cutoff threshold set that year; Class 12 (or equivalent) qualifying-marks criteria also apply.
APPLICATION
Make your application count.
Application process
Online registration through the official JEE Advanced portal, open only to JEE Main qualifiers within the eligible rank range, hosted by that year's zonal coordinating IIT.
PATTERN
Know what you are preparing for.
Exam pattern
Two compulsory papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), each combining multiple question formats (single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical-answer-type, and matching-type) across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Marking scheme
Marking varies by question type (single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical) and is announced afresh each year in the official information brochure; partial marking applies to some multiple-correct-answer questions.
SYLLABUS
Build your subject foundation.
Syllabus
Class 11-12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at a significantly higher problem-solving difficulty than JEE Main, emphasizing conceptual application over direct formula recall.
PREPARATION
Prepare with a sense of direction.
Preparation strategy
Deepen JEE Main-level preparation with advanced, multi-concept problems, and practice previous years' JEE Advanced papers extensively — the exam rewards conceptual synthesis over direct formula application.

A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WONDER
Good questions. Clearer answers.
Do I have to write both JEE Advanced papers?
Yes. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 must be attempted — no result is prepared for a candidate who is absent for either paper.
Can I choose the question paper language during registration?
No language choice is made at registration. You pick English or Hindi when the computer-based test starts, and you can switch between the two languages at any point during the exam.
Are rough sheets provided during the exam?
Yes — candidates are given a 'Scribble Pad' of blank sheets for rough work, and must bring their own pen/pencil/eraser.
What happens if two candidates get the same aggregate marks?
Ties are broken first by higher positive marks, then by higher Mathematics marks, then higher Physics marks; if still tied, both candidates are assigned the same rank.
Do I need to register with JoSAA separately after qualifying JEE Advanced?
Yes. Qualifying JEE Advanced does not itself allocate a seat — all qualified candidates must separately register with JoSAA and fill in their course choices to be considered for IIT admission.
Can I get a printout of my question paper and responses after the exam?
No physical copies are issued. Your responses and the questions become available for download from the candidate portal on the JEE Advanced website after the exam.
I can't download my admit card — who do I contact?
Contact the Chairperson of JEE Advanced at your nearest Zonal Coordinating IIT, as listed in Annexure V of the Information Brochure.
